Advanced Season 1, Lesson 6: Economic Problems!

Hi everyone!

Today’s advanced lesson is a reading lesson.

Please start by reading the paragraph below.

These days, people all over the world are feeling the effects of the world’s financial crisis. Things started to get bad in  the late 2000′s, and to this day people are still struggling.

There are many signs of this economic downturn. For example, many people have lost their jobs, and new jobs aren’t being created as quickly as they used to be. Another sign of the problems is people have less disposable income than they used to, due to things like more expensive food, housing and transport; and a lack of pay increases in recent years.

How can we cope with this situation? There are many things that we can do.

-First of all, it’s important to get used to spending less money. We should look at where our money goes, and decide whether there are measures we can take to reduce our expenditure.
-Secondly, we should plan for a rainy day. Even if we have an income right now, there is no guarantee that our jobs will be safe in the future. Therefore, it is important to accumulate savings if at all possible.
-Thirdly, try to have a back-up plan. If you do lose your job or home, what will you do? Do you have other sources of income or another place to live?

Above all, it’s important to stay positive and to remember that this is a natural cycle. Economies get better and worse as time goes by. Things will no doubt improve in the future.

Let’s look at some of the key words and expressions from this lesson:

-financial crisis: the period of time when the world’s economy has been bad
-economic downturn: A period of time when the economy gets worse
-disposable income: Part of your salary which you don’t spend on essential items like food or housing.
-expenditure: The money you spend.
-plan for a rainy day: Be prepared for a difficult tim in the future, such as not having enough money.
-accumulate: Gather/Build up.
-back-up plan: A plan for if things don’t go well.

Now, let’s read the paragraph again:

Advanced Season 1, Lesson 5: An Inspirational Speech

learn English online free video lesson

Hey guys,

Today’s lesson is a video lesson. We will start by watching a video. We will then read the text of the video. Then we will watch the video once more. Finally, we will answer some questions about the video.

Let’s start!

1. Please watch the following movie:

2. Now, please read the movie text below.

I’m sorry. But I don’t want to be an emperor. It’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible. Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each others’ happiness, not by each others’ misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. This world has room for everyone and the good Earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful. But we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls; has barricaded the world with hate. Has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.

We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities life would be violent and all will be lost. The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men. Cries out for universal brotherhood, for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world. Millions of despairing men, women and little children. Victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. For those who can hear me I say “Do not despair!” The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass and dictators die. And the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.

Soldiers, don’t give yourselves to brutes! Men who despise you, enslave you; who regiment your lives; tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel! Who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle! Use you as cannon fodder! Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men! With machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don’t hate, only the unloved hate. The unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers, don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written “The Kingdom of God is within man. Not one man nor a group of men. But in all men! In you! You, the people have the power. The power to create machines. The power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful. To make this life a wonderful adventure. Then, in the name of democracy let us use that power. Let us all unite! Let us fight for a new world, a decent world, that will give men a chance to work, give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things brutes have risen to power. But they lie, they do not fulfil their promises. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise, let us fight to free the world. To do away with national barriers, to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us all unite!

Advanced Season 1, Lesson 4: I Lost My Wallet!

learn English online free advanced lesson 4

Hey guys!

Welcome to this advanced video lesson! This is a video lesson which should be very helpful for improving your listening skills.

In today’s lesson I will tell you an experience I had recently when I lost my wallet in London and I couldn’t get home! It was very stressful!

Please start by watching the video below.

Here is the transcript:

Hi guys! Welcome to this advanced lesson.

Today I’d like to tell you about an experience I had a few months ago in London when I lost my wallet. I live about 50 miles away from London, which is about 80Km. And sometimes I like to take a trip to London to do various things. Of course, in London there’s so much

Inside the British Museum. Isn't it amazing?

to do, so much to enjoy. And one thing I like to do is go to interesting museums. So, it was my plan to go to a place called the British Museum, which is a very very famous museum in London. One of the most famous museums in the world in fact. They’ve got a wonderful collection of things from all over the world. So much history, so much culture, it’s a fantastic place to go if ever you get the chance. And I went to London for the day and I took the Underground train. We call it “The Unerground”, in other countries it’s called a subway or metro. I took the Underground train to the museum and I opened my bag to get my camera out, and I found that the front of my bag was open, which is you know, a problem! And, I found that actually my wallet was missing. My wallet was gone! Which is of course, a really bad thing.

Now, in my wallet I had my train ticket to travel home; I had all of my cash, and I had all of my bank cards. So of course I had no money, and no way to get home. This is a serious problem! So, the first thing that I did was I had to call the bank. I had to call the bank to cancel my cards, because of course if you lose your bank card, maybe maybe somebody will use your card to buy something or to take some money from your bank account. It’s a serious problem. So I had to call the bank and get the cards cancelled. Unfortunately, I have a lot of different bank cards, with different banks, and I even have a card with a bank in South Korea because of course I was living in Korea for a few years. So I had to make phone calls to all the different bank accounts, for credit cards, debit cards, and I had to ring people on my phone. I had to call them in Korea just to cancel, or at least to try to cancel my card in Korea. It was very difficult as of course it was the middle of the night in Korea. In England the time was about 3pm, but in Korea it was about midnight! So it was a big problem to have to call people, to wake them up and say “Can you go on to the website of the bank and find the emergency phone number and call the bank?” Terrible!

Next, I had to find a way to travel across London back to the main train station so that I could travel home. Now, I went to the Underground train station, the subway station, and I asked them if there was a way that I could give my name and address and get a ticket and then pay it back when I got home. But there was no way, unfortunately, it’s impossible. So, what I had to do was, I had to walk across London, erm, it wasn’t too far, it was maybe about two and a half miles walking, but the problem was it was very very

The entrance to a London Underground station.

busy. It was a Friday evening. So, by this time, there were a lot of people travelling around London; a lot of people going home from work, and also a lot of people going out to go to maybe go to a bar or a restaurant, or the theatre, or something like this. So lots of people were everywhere. So, it was very very slow to walk through London.

Finally, after, I think about two hours of walking through London, it was so slow, after about two hours of walking, I finally found my way to the train station where I needed to be to travel home. And, I went and I asked at the ticket office “Is there some kind of way that I can give you my name and my address and I can pay for the ticket when I get home?” But they said there was no way, it was impossible. So what do you do? What do you do in this situation when you can go home? When you don’t have any money, and you don’t have a bank card, and you can’t get a free ticket temporarily? It’s a serious problem. But, they said what I could do was I could contact someone and they could call a phone number and then that person could pay for my train ticket with a credit card. And then, I could collect my card from the ticket office. Sorry, I should say “collect my train ticket”, from the ticket office, and then I would be able to go home. Now, that’s a good idea, but, when I did it it actually took a very very long time. I contacted my Dad and I asked him to call the number and to request to buy a train ticket for me to come home. But it took about one hour between him making the phone call and the train ticket finally being ready.

So it took so much time, all of it. I remember I arrived at the museum at about 3 o’clock, and it wasn’t until about 8 o’clock that evening that I was able to take a train and travel home. So, it was a really terrible day! And even though I travelled all the way to London to go to the museum, I was only in the museum for about 30 seconds before I realised my wallet had gone. And I had to try to find a way to go home. So it took half a day just to get home from this situation. So, I don’t know what happened to my wallet, maybe I lost it or maybe it was stolen. I guess I’ll never know. But these things happen and at least I got home.

Ok, so, I hope this was enjoyable for you, and I hope that you can practise your listening skills with this video. And, I’ll see you next time. Bye!

Advanced Season 1, Lesson 2: The British Weather!

learn English online advanced lesson 2

Hey guys!

Today’s advanced lesson is a reading lesson for you. First, read about the British weather below. And then try to do the quiz at the bottom!

The British Weather

There are few things British people like to talk about more than the weather. This is because the weather in Britain changes so often. If someone aksed me to desrcibe the weather in Britain, I’d have to say that it can be four seasons in one day! You can have warm weather, rain, wind, clouds and snow all in the same day! The British weather is actually one of the first things that visitors to the U.K. notice. Rather than having brilliant sunshine or icy cold, most visitors will be struck by how much rain, clouds, wind, and also blue skies one place can have.

The reason for the unpredictable nature of Britain’s weather is the location of the country. Great Britain is an island in North-Western Europe. As such, Britain enjoys the warmth brought by the Gulf Stream from the Atlantic Ocean. This is a current of warmth produced by the ocean flowing from Florida all the way to Europe and Africa. Thanks to the Gulf stream, Britain doesn’t get too cold for most of the year. However, there are disadvantages to being an island next to the Atlantic Ocean. With oceans come clouds and rain, and Britain get s a lot of both! As such, even in the summer British people have to put up with overcast days and heavy rainfall. This is a source of disappointment to many tourists and locals alike!

Personally, I don’t like the weather in Britain. Well, I certainly don’t like the clouds and rain, anyway. I have been to lots of countries that have wonderful sunny weather all year round, without too much rain. And I have been to countries which, even though they are very cold, get lots of beautiful snow. But Britain doesn’t have much glorious sunshine, and it also doesn’t get very much snow. I find the cloudy, grey weather very depressing, actually. If the sky is blue I always feel cheerful, even if it is cold outside. But when the sky is grey and there isn’t much light, it makes me want to stay indoors!

Britain is famous for the sense of humour people have. People around the world talk about “The British sense of humour”. British people often have a very “self-deprecating” sense of humour. This means we don’t mind laughing at ourselves, and don’t take ourselves too seriously. I think we might have this sense of humour as we are used to disappointing weather, and rather than feeling upset about the bad weather we have learnt to laugh about it. In the same way, we have learnt to laugh at our own failures rather than getting too upset about them.

Now try answering some questions!

Advanced Season 1, Lesson 1: Transformers, Dark of the Moon

Learn English Conversation- Watch Transformers

Hey everyone! Welcome to English advanced lesson 1!

Please watch the video. The transcript for the whole video is below:

“Hey guys! Welcome to the Advanced Season 1 Lesson 1. This will be a kind of audio video blog. So you can just listen to what I talk about and see how much you can understand. Even if the subject’s boring, maybe you can practise your English listening skills. So, today I’ll talk about two things. The first thing I’ll talk about is the new Transformers movie which I went to see last week or this week, and the other thing I’ll talk about is the Wimbledon tennis which of course finished very recently.

So first, let’s take a look at the new Transformers movie. Now the storyline is basically following on from the other two Transformers movies. If you enjoyed those movies, for sure you’ll enjoy this one. I won’t spoil it too much. Also I can’t remember half of what happened, which doesn’t help! The special effects of the movie were really really good, yeah, the computer generated stuff is really fantastic, as usual, I really enjoyed that. If you’re a fan of the old Transformers cartoon, which used to be a children’s show, then for sure you’ll enjoy these movies. I really used to enjoy the cartoon so I like the movies and the computer generated CGI stuff. The movie’s available in 3D, if you want to watch it in 3D, so if you wanna wear the sort of err plastic, plastic glasses, you can do that!

What did I like about it? I liked the story line, I thought it was quite cool, it was to do with them having to go to the moon to get something, because something was left on the moon, and, that was pretty interesting, pretty good ideas.
Is it worth going to see this movie? Yeah, for sure. I think it’s worth going to see. I think that it’s erm, probably one of the better movies that I’ve seen this year. I really did think it was worth, worth watching. So my rating for this movie, for Transformers 3, Dark of the Moon, is going to be 4 stars, out of 5, so, go and see it!

Next I’ll talk about the Wimbledon tennis which of course finished on Sunday. I’m a big fan of the Wimbledon tournament. I think it’s a lot of fun to watch especially as it’s in England, it’s in London, so, it’s obviously very famous in my country. And it’s also very famous around the world. I always enjoy watching tennis on TV. I like seeing the other major tournaments, the French Open, the U.S. Open and also the Australian Open.

And I’ve really enjoyed tennis in recent years because we’ve been very lucky to see two of probably the best players who have ever played tennis. And of course these guys are Rafa Nadal from Spain, and of course Roger Federer from Switzerland. Rafa Nadal is maybe about three or four years younger than Roger Federer, so he’s probably going to be around a little bit longer than Federer, but both of them are incredible players and they’ve had an incredible rivalry throughout their careers; which actually mostly Rafa Nadal has had the upper hand. He’s beaten Roger Federer many many times in major tournaments, particularly in the finals of tournaments.

But the most recent Wimbledon tournament was won by Novak Djokovic from Serbia, so, that was really good to see. Another guy winning the tournament, that was good fun for everybody and congratulations to him.

Ok, I hope that you enjoyed this and you weren’t too bored, and err, I’ll see you next time, so, have a great day! Bye.”
